How to Write the Best, Catchiest Subject Lines

How to Write the Best, Catchiest Subject Lines

An e-mail’s subject line is a brief look into the overall content of the message. You must rely on the subject line to draw people in, hoping that it makes your audience feel inclined to open up that email and peruse more. In fact, 33% of email recipients decide whether or not to open emails based on subject lines alone. Because of this, you need to make sure your subject lines are always top-notch. You may wonder, “How can I do this?” Robb Digital Marketing is here to break it down for you.

  • Keep it short, sweet, and to the point

A message that is brief and easy to read will likely generate results. Wordy messages will likely be overlooked and ignored. Keeping it “short and sweet” will almost guarantee your viewer’s attention.

  • Use personalization and make your audience feel special

When recipients feel as though they are valued, they’re more likely to be interested in the rest of the email’s content. You can convey your appreciation to your customers by addressing them directly, like incorporating the recipient’s first name, or general location. For example, in addition to using names and locations, try including “Only for our best customers” or “You’re invited!”.

  • Get to the point – tell them what awaits

Embedding your email with pointless information will not grab your reader’s attention. Tell them what’s inside–eliminate the curiosity off the bat. This also acts as an incentive to the reader to open the message. For example, subject lines may read “new offer enclosed!” or “your package awaits”.

  • Begin with call-to-action verbs

Using phrases like “act now!”, “click here”, or “learn more” is an effective method to grab the reader’s attention and it motivates them to make the next move.

  • Invoke a sense of urgency

No audience wants to miss out on deals, offers, sales, etc.  When they think there is a deadline, they’re more likely to take action. Subject lines indicating there is minimal time left to reap a benefit will certainly encourage them to open the message and find out more. To incorporate a sense of urgency, try something like “ut-oh, your _____ is about to expire” or “hurry! This offer won’t be available for long.”

  • Pose a relevant question

Beginning your subject with a relevant question is likely to spark interest in the reader, and make them curious to read on.  For example, “Are you making mistakes in your PPC strategy?” or “Do you know what you’ve been doing wrong all along?”. Ask questions that make the reader think that they’d be doing themselves a disservice if they don’t click and view the email.

  • Get creative! Incorporate some comedy, a pun, or story allusion

Making a witty subject line will leave readers no choice to click on and find out more.  It sets you apart from the others, and makes your business appear more personable.

  • Don’t be too exclamatory

When crafting your brilliant subject line, be sure to gently relay your message without too many capital letters or exclamation points. They may make it appear as though you’re yelling at them, and that is no way to get their attention.
